Did you study British or American English at school? You probably didn’t study Singaporean English and the accent might be difficult for you. English native speakers can understand a lot of different accents. And if you want to speak good English, it’s important that you try to understand a lot of different accents too.


If you’ve just arrived in Singapore, don’t worry! You will soon be able to understand the local accent.


One of the best ways to start practicing English with locals is to visit the wet markets. A good place to start are Singapore’s coolest neighbourhoods like Tiong Bahru, Toa Payoh, Joo Chiat, Jalan Besar and Bedok.


Make some new friends with the aunties and uncles and enjoy some delicious local food at the same time. It’s a win-win situation! They get a new customer and you get to build confidence, practice English and buy some delicious veggies at the same time!
