Crowded Commutes: Experiencing the Packed MRT During Peak Hours

Writer's picture: Richard SelwynRichard Selwyn

Living in Singapore offers many unique experiences, one of which is navigating the crowded MRT during peak hours. If you've ever been squished into a train car with what feels like half the city, you'll understand the art of squeezing in and finding your zen amidst the hustle and bustle. Here's a humorous account of my MRT adventures and how it ties into our lesson on taking the stress out of life.

My First Peak Hour Commute

When I first moved to Singapore, I was warned about the packed MRT during peak hours. Being an optimist, I thought, "How bad could it be?" So, one Monday morning, I ventured out at 8 AM to catch the train to work. The station was already teeming with people, and as the train doors opened, I was swept in by a wave of commuters. It was like a human Tetris game, and I had to find a way to fit into the remaining space.

Learning the Art of Squeezing In

The key to surviving a packed MRT ride is to remain calm and courteous. I quickly learned a few tips:

  • Positioning: Stand near the doors but not too close. This gives you a chance to maneuver into the car while letting others exit.

  • Bag Etiquette: Always remove your backpack and hold it by your side or in front of you to create more space.

  • Pole Sharing: Grip the poles lightly and make room for others to hold on as well. Sharing is caring!

Despite the initial discomfort, I began to appreciate the efficiency of Singapore’s public transport system. The MRT is punctual, clean, and connects seamlessly to various parts of the city.

Linking to Our Lesson on Taking the Stress Out of Life

Navigating a crowded MRT can be stressful, but it doesn't have to be. In our lesson, we discuss ways to reduce stress and find balance in daily life. Here's how we can incorporate this experience into our learning:

Discussing Stress Management

  1. What are your strategies for managing stress during daily commutes?

  2. Do you have any tips for staying calm in crowded places?

  3. Is there a particular routine you follow to relax after a hectic day?

Exercise 1: Discussing Activities

Reflecting on crowded commutes, we can talk about:

  • Yoga or Meditation: These activities help in finding inner peace amidst chaos.

  • Listening to Music or Podcasts: A great way to make your commute enjoyable and less stressful.

Exercise 2: Vocabulary - Stress and Relaxation Techniques

Using the commute as context:

  • Breathing Exercises: Practice deep breathing to stay calm during peak hours.

  • Mindfulness: Focus on the present moment, letting go of the stress around you.

Exercise 3: Listening Practice

Imagine a conversation about handling crowded commutes:

  • Relaxing and doing nothing special: How to unwind after a stressful day.

  • Watching a sports event: Engaging in enjoyable activities to relieve stress.
